Southern Company Holt Plant
The plant staff provide a guided tour of the facility, both inside the generation building and outside around the spillway and dam. An electrical engineer from Southern Company’s Birmingham office, Mr. Ed Guindon, joins the group to provide a sound dampening experiment related to the EE lab given by Dr. Stern and his EE graduate assistant. Mr. Guindon uses a handbell and a sound level meter on a turbine deck to show the frequency content of the turbine/generator noise, expecting to see 60 Hz content in both the vibration and sound spectra. The experiment and the lab both give hands-on examples of changes in frequency of sine waves with sound.
